What are CA Exams?

CA exams, also known as ICAI exams, are among the most difficult tests in India, administered by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. The CA exam has three levels: Foundation, Intermediate, and Final. After completing all three tests, students will be granted ICAI membership and will be able to practice as a CA. These tests are given twice a year, once in May and once in November.

Levels of ICAI CA Exam 

As previously stated, the CA examinations are divided into three levels, which are discussed in the next section.

The CA Foundation Exam:-  is the initial step toward becoming a CA. The ICAI administers the CA Foundation course test twice a year, in June and December. Students must register with the Board of Studies (BoS) after passing the class X exams. Students qualify for the Foundation level after clearing the Class 12th exams.

CA Intermediate Exam :- CA Intermediate is a second level exam that consists of two groups of four courses each. To sit for the CA intermediate test, candidates must have passed the CA foundation exam or be a graduate.

CA Final Exam - This is the final stage in becoming a Chartered Accountant. During the articleship time, students can register for CA Final exams after passing both levels of CA Intermediate. CA Final level contains two groups, each with four papers.

CA Exam Eligibility Criteria for CA Final Exam 

CA Final Level: In order to be qualified for the CA final level, students must pass both groups of the CA intermediate level and complete at least 2.5 years of articleship training under the supervision of a certified firm.

CA Final Exam Pattern & Scoring System

In 2025, CA Final examinations are the final level of CA exams. CA final exams are divided into two groups. Each group comprises four disciplines, and students must pass each exam. The following table describes the ICAI CA Final test pattern:

Documents Required for CA Final Registration 2025

  • Before submitting the CA Final application form, the following documents must be accessible for scanning:
  • The candidates most recent passport-sized and coloured photograph.
  • CA IPCC/CA Intermediate marksheet duly authenticated.
  • Proof of nationality (for international students).
  • Attested copy of a special category certificate (for SC/ST/disabled candidates)
  • CA Foundation/ CPT marksheet (if the candidate is not applying through the straight way)

How can I register for the CA finals using the SSP portal? 

New candidates must register via the Student Service Portal (SSP). To register, candidates must complete the following steps:

  • Go to the "Self Service Portal" section of the icai.org website. 
  • Enter your User ID and password to log in.
  •  Proceed to the next window by selecting the "Click here to access SSP portal" tab. 
  • The Student Cycle and the Article Cycle will be the two options. To access the CA final registration form, select the "Final" TAB. 
  • The primary information will be auto-filled and can be modified as needed. 

Validity of  CA Final Registration 2025

CA final exams, according to ICAI standards, final exams are valid for five years. After that, candidates must revalidate their registration period. 

Revalidation can be completed by submitting a duly completed revalidation form online using the students dashboard. Register as an existing student and pay the Rs. 500 CA Final revalidation cost.

CA Final exams passing criteria 

To pass a CA Final group, students must score at least 40% on each paper and an overall score of 50%. If you receive the necessary marks, you will be declared passed for that group.

Students must pass both sets in order to pass the CA Final examinations and become a CA.

Inter New Course ICAI January 2025

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India has announced the revised test schedule for CA Final Intermediate and Foundation for attempts beginning in January 2025.

Under the new structure, the ICAI has entirely modified the test format; the number of exams has also been reduced from 8 to 6 for CA Intermediate and CA Final. In addition, MCQs are implemented in all CA Intermediate and CA Final disciplines.

CA Course Duration January 2025 under New Course

The length of CA Articleship, which was three years in the previous plan, has been shortened to two years in the new scheme beginning in January 2025. The entire course time has been reduced from 48 months to 42 months under the new program.  

CA Foundation

  • Business Regulations The section on Business Correspondence and Reporting has been eliminated from the Law paper. 
  • The Business Economics Business and Commercial Knowledge section has been removed from the Economics Paper.

CA Intermediate 

Code of Ethics and Auditing The code of ethics section is entirely new to CA Inter Students.

CA Final 

AFM stands for Advanced Financial Management. Some subjects are added - Some new topics are added to derivatives. 

CA Final and Intermediate New Scheme Negative Marking

The ICAI has implemented a 25% negative marking policy in all CA Final and Intermediate New Course subjects.

Passing Criteria for CA Foundation, Intermediate, and Final Exams Starting in January 2025

  • The exemption requirements under the new plan have changed. 
  • Exempt papers (60+ marks) will now be treated as permanently passed papers by the ICAI. 
  • Individually, students must achieve 50% in the remaining papers. 
  • Under the new ICAI program, students can also forfeit their exemption.

Significant Modifications to the ICAI New Exam Pattern for January 2025.

Under the new structure, the ICAI has overhauled the CA test pattern completely. Furthermore, the number of tests for CA Intermediate and CA Final levels has been reduced from 8 to 6. Notably, MCQs have been introduced into all CA Intermediate and CA Final subjects, which is a huge improvement.
